Why?
10 years -- it's been 10 long years since Neutral Milk Hotel played live (I'm not counting the 2001 show in New Zealand) because that was a set that happened to have some NMH tracks but it wasn't a NMH gig.
NMH is/was Jeff Mangum with very some strong musical support from Julian Koster, Scott Spillane and Jeremy Barnes. But Mangum is the voice and the enigma of NMH and completely the reason fans want to see a NMH show. If you were in school (college or high-school) in 1998 and you were sort of cool then you probably remember In the Aeroplane Over the Sea -- and it probably had a profound effect on you so much so that the last 10 years have been a little more tolerable, a slice more poetic, and whole bunch more beautiful than it otherwise would have been. Aeroplanes was the bands second album but is an unusually accomplished album by any measure and it is unique beyond compare.
Anyway, I could ramble on for the longest time but NMH fans know who they are and know how special a Jeff Mangum/NMH show would be. Ahh.... just venting about the idea of a show is making me feel better already.
Money is almost certainly not the issue -- no doubt about it. There are probably a ton of reasons Jeff Mangum doesn't want to do a NMH show. But that doesn't mean we as fans can let him know in a very real sense how cool it would be.
